Tales of a Closet Mystic: An Ordinary Man’s Unexpected Encounter with the Divine, is a spiritual memoir of an average man’s quest to get closer to God. Bill Ramstack describes life as a baby boomer growing up in the early 50’s in the Midwest. He writes of a religious experience dominated by fear and filled with hypocrisy. Frustrated, like many in his generation, he eventually gives up on his church AND on his God. Decades pass. During a funeral of a dear friend, he is confronted with questions concerning our mortality. Is there a life after death? Is there a God? Where is God? Can we have a relationship with the Divine? Bill decides that day to go on a private quest to get questions answered. He chose to pursue any spiritual path that appealed to him with no rules other than to follow to his heart and to pursue what worked for him. What follows at times resembles an Indiana Jones expedition. What resulted stupefied him. The more he pursued these goals, the more the mystical experiences emerged. In this intriguing, often humorous and occasionally astounding story Bill Ramstack reveals some of his discoveries giving you the opportunity to explore the techniques he found successful.
Bill was a colleague back "in the day" and we have remained "faintly" in contact. I was eager to read his book as I know him to be a genuine and thoughtful person. I did not get to reading it right away, thinking it would be a bit "heavy" reading but was completely wrong on that count. It moves quickly and engages the reader with well written examples of his experiences and even better his contemplating thoughts as he works to put this new-found spirituality into some context. For skeptics on the power of spirituality, Bill brings in references from many known and highly regarded texts including St. Francis of Assisi, Buddha, Emerson, Einstein and the Bible. He uses this references to support what he is experiencing as he relates that the story is not over. The sub-title is very fitting, "An Ordinary Man's Unexpected Encounter with the Divine." An ordinary man with wonderful story-telling and writing ability to share his experiences with others.
