I bought this to keep my cute, loving puppy from devouring my shoes. She has an affinity for the expensive, new ones. This works wonderfully. Highly recommend. (It probably works for kid-proofing, too.)My son had thwarted every other "child safety lock" I tried. He either figures it out or destroys it with his Hulk strength. Even the pricey magnetic ones that are a pain to install. So the only place I can store things in his room is in his closet, which has sliding doors.I know some children have broken this lock, but it's been up for a few months and I think he's given up on it (he did break the actual door by laying on the floor and kicking it in, I fixed/reinforced the door and he *still* has not gotten past the kidco lock). Some tips:- He can tear off anything mounted on foam tape in a matter of seconds, and if I screwed it down he would figure out how to push down the tabs (or he'd just break them off). So I put it well out of his reach. That's kind of a given.- The other thing I did was to take the knobs off and make sure the closet door was flush against the door frame when locked. If he was able to pull a handle or wedge his fingers between the frame and the door he'd just pull with all of his weight and break the lock off that way. With it flush against the wall he doesn't have any leverage.- I don't open the closet door with him watching. I don't know if he's really ever noticed the lock, but he hasn't tried pushing a chair/stool over to the door to reach it so I'm not going to point it out. If we're both in his room and he wants something out of there I just tell him "it's locked" and I open it when he isn't paying attention. If your child is really insistent on getting into the closet, pretend your child is a detective and the closet is full of evidence that will put you away for a long time. "It's locked, maybe if you turn around for a second or leave the room it will mysteriously open."Let me begin by saying, we have cats -- my wife and I. One of them is a bit nervous. She would spend her life in the closet if possible, climbing up and down my wife's wardrobe. My wife loves the cat, but hates the behavior. After about a year of hearing her displeasure at the site of some newly ruined piece of clothing, I developed a slight case of PTSD. I would cringe everytime she went to the closet.I'm not the most proactive husband. I admit it. I went for the easy fix first, wedging something like a chip of wood or a wadded up piece of cardboard under the door. I was lazy, true enough. Eventually I realized I needed to get serious, so I found this product, bought it, and put it up. I can't adequately express how much peace this little plastic contraption brought to my home: PROBLEM SOLVED.About the negative reviews. It does have a very thin adhesive strip. Our closet doors are mirrored, so they provide an ideal surface. Even so, you have to thoroughly clean, degrease and dry the surface just before you stick it up. Once you attach the device, I recommend applying pressure for a few minutes. I kept rubbing mine down with my thumb to make sure that it had bonded.I imagine that you can shear it off pretty easily though if you were to ram the door into it. By looking at the picture you can see how that might happen. Nevertheless, ours has been up without a problem for more than 6 months. My wife is happy. The cat is bewildered, and I've stopped cringingI had bought the kidco sliding door locks that have these dimensions: Product Dimensions: 12 x 10 x 3 inches and used them on the house we lived in prior to the recent move we just had - the problem with it was the wing span was so short that you had to have sliding doors that were tightly together so we had to put a wood chip on the door to lift it higher to work well. We were aware of this because we read the porduct dimensions, but there were no other good options. However, after awhile the plastic became weak from pressing on the edges to open the doors and broke at the bend, since it was just a bend - not hinged. We moved into this new house and the sliding doors were on top railings, not both top and bottom ones. In otherwords our little ones can push on the bottom of the doors and they push inwards of the closet and of course slide them open with out a locking device. I did my research and choose this product and thankfully it works wonderfully! The wings are a lot longer and they are hinged so you can press on them and not worry to much about them breaking (since they are hinged, not just bent) we placed them at the top of the sliding doors and the girls cant slide the closet open. Now the girls stay out - so it works like it should!Installation: easyWorks: yeskid safe: yesWould I buy again if needed: absolutely!Suggestions: make sure the area is smooth, cleaned and free of dirt etc.. before installing. I recommend using rubbing alcohol on the area you plan on placing this on.It can break off if not installed correctly and/or there is a lot of abuse to it, such as: constant hard yanking, jerking and slamming to get the doors open. If you feel that will be the case, maybe look for a more perminate solution.
